Here are some tips to help you reduce, reuse and recycle waste at home.

1) Try to reduce your rubbish by buying things with as little packaging as possible.

2) Buy good quality products as cheap things break easily and end up in the bin.

3) If you don’t need a plastic bag, don’t take one!

4) Bring your own bags with you when you go shopping.

5) Take old toys, books and clothes to a charity shop for reuse.

6) Refill an empty plastic bottle with water rather than buying new bottles time.
This reduces waste and saves you money!

7) Only buy as much food as you need. This will also save you money!

8) Get a home composter from your Council. Then you can make compost to feed
your garden from dead plants and flowers.

Bei einigen Wörtern ist es fast egal, ob du Gerund oder den Infinitiv verwendest. Manchmal gibt es einen kleinen Unterschied, wie du an folgenden Beispielen siehst.

I'm afraid to go by bike on this road.	I'm afraid of having an accident.
Ich weiß, dass es gefährlich ist, auf dieser Straße zu fahren.	Ich habe Angst, dass etwas Schlimmes passiert.

help

I can't help laughing in serious situations.	We always help (to) clean the car.
Ich kann nichts dafür, dass ich auch in ernsten Situationen lachen muss.	Wir helfen immer, das Auto sauber zu machen. (to muss nicht immer stehen)

like

I like reading books. = I like to read books.
Es gibt eigentlich keinen Unterschied zwischen diesen beiden Sätzen.

Man nimmt das Gerund, wenn man like im Sinne von 'enjoy' ersetzen kann.
Beispiel: I like riding my bike.

Man nimmt den Infinitiv, wenn man die Sache tut, weil man denkt, dass es so gut ist.
Beispiel: I like to do my homework in the afternoon.
Hier betone ich, dass das Erledigen der Hausaufgaben am Nachmittag gut ist.

I like watching films.	I would like to watch the film.
Hier mag man es, Filme anzusehen.	Hier möchte man den Film ansehen (Ich will mir den Film ansehen).

need

The window needs cleaning.	I need to go.
Der Satz hat hier Passivbedeutung. Es muss etwas getan werden.	Ich muss jetzt gehen. (es ist notwendig)

remember

I remember switching off the lights.	I remember to switch off the lights.
Ich hab das Licht ausgemacht und ich erinnere mich jetzt daran, es auch getan zu haben.	Ich habe mich dran erinnert, das Licht auszumachen, (bevor ich z.B. weggehe) deswegen habe ich das Licht ausgemacht.

stop

I stopped smoking.	I stopped to smoke.
Ich habe mit dem Rauchen aufgehört.	Ich habe angehalten, um eine (Zigarette) zu rauchen.

try

I tried taking an aspirin but it didn't help.	Try to be quiet when you come home late.
Leider hatte die Tablette keine Wirkung. (probieren, im Sinne von Test)	Versuch leise zu sein, wenn du spät heimkommst.

used to

He is used to smoking.	He used to smoke.
Er ist ans Rauchen gewöhnt. = Er raucht immer noch.	Er war ans Rauchen gewöhnt. = Er hat mit dem Rauchen aufgehört.

Nach folgenden Verben kann sowohl das Gerund als auch der Infinitiv stehen:
begin	He began talking. He began to talk.	Er begann mit dem Sprechen.
continue	They continue smoking. They continue to smoke.	Sie machen mit dem Rauchen weiter.
hate	Do you hate working on Saturdays? Do you hate to work on Saturdays?	Hasst du es, an Samstagen zu arbeiten?
like	I like swimming. I like to swim.	Ich mag (das) Schwimmen.
love	She loves painting. She loves to paint.	Sie mag das Malen.
prefer	Pat prefers walking home. Pat prefers to walk home.	Pat bevorzugt es, nach Hause zu laufen.

Auch nach folgenden Verben kann sowohl das Gerund als auch der Infinitiv stehen. Beachte folgende Strukturen: Gerund: Verb + -ing Infinitiv: Verb + Person (als Objekt) + Infinitiv mit to
advise	They advise walking to town. They advise us to walk to town.	Sie raten uns, in die Stadt zu laufen.
allow	They do not allow smoking here. They do not allow us to smoke here.	Sie erlauben uns hier das Rauchen nicht.
encourage	They encourage doing the test. They encourage us to do the test.	Sie ermutigen uns, den Test zu machen.
permit	They do not permit smoking here. They do not permit us to smoke here.	Sie erlauben uns hier das Rauchen nicht.

Wenn nach recommend der Infinitiv verwendet wird, steht nach recommend noch das Wort that, danach das Objekt und dann der Infinitiv ohne to.

Sie raten uns, in die Stadt zu laufen.

Environmental Damage of Plastic Bags

The environmental damage caused by plastic bags is enormous. Plastic makes up 80% of the volume of litter on roads, parks, and beaches and makes up 90% of floating litter in the ocean In every square mile of ocean there are over 46,000 pieces of plastic. This puts an enormous strain on the environment. The little pieces of plastic act as a sort of sponge for chemicals. They soak up millions of deadly compounds. Marine life then eats these pieces and dies. It is estimated that over a 100,000 different birds, seals and whales die every year After the animal dies the plastic is free to roam the ocean and kill again.

When plastic bags find their way into the ocean they kill endangered turtles. Plastic bags are eaten by turtles who confuse them for jellyfish, their primary food source. The turtles then suffocate.

Plastic bags wrap themselves around living coral and quickly kill them. This has become a huge problem for Australia, whose Great Barrier Reef is being threatened by little white bags of death. Plastic bags trap seals and sea lions, prevent whales from digesting and kill birds by the thousands.

Despite what some economist tell you, you cannot put a price on the environment. If people realized the destruction that is done to the environment or the amount of animals that die from their over consumption of plastic bags, I'm sure they would switch to a reusable bag.

We need to make sure that the bags that are consumed are recycled and not just littered into the streets.

Our Life in 2050

Your texts are marvellous.
I am really proud of you lot!

We don’t know how our future will be. We only can try to imagine it.
Probably we will use computers every day: At school, for homework, for our jobs.
I'm sure things and people will be different. Maybe people will be lazier, because robots will do their housework. We can have an easier and faster life. In 2050 we will travel to other planets instead of foreign countries.
One of the biggest problems will be that vehicles will still pollute nature.
But we can make the situation better. For instance, we can use public transport or we can use the bike. On the one hand there will be many rich people, but on the other hand there will be many homeless and jobless people.
All in all I think positive about the future.

When I think of the future I feel really scared.
Many people do not care enough about the environment. We don't know how our future will look like. We only can try to imagine it.
I think in forty years half of the population will live on the street. Everything will have changed.
Let me show some examples: Computers will be too expensive, TV will only show black and white programmes and cars will also be too expensive. Spending holidays will also be completely different. The gap between rich and poor will be bigger. We will worry about our and our children’s future.
But I think we should be rather optimistic about this matter. We should live and be happy not thinking too much about what will or won't be possible in the future.

Of course we want to know how our life will be in forty years, but we are only able to guess it.
In the year 2050 lots of things will be different.
The Earth might be totally destroyed because of pollution and so we will live on another planet.
Some things will be easier and others maybe crazier. There might be wars. Water could get scarce and countries could start fighting for it.
I am sure we will drive solar-powered cars. In addition, planes could get popular for the traffic. It is definitely true that many things will be invented . Nobody can tell which ones - but everything will be different, maybe even some things in your family will change.
But that's not the only thing we should consider. What we should really think about is in which way we can influence our future. The next years may show what way our technology is going to take. Is it going to keep spoiling our planet or will it start to invent environmentally-friendly technology? That’s another question which nobody is able to answer yet. But the person who can make the decision about that, are you, the consumer.

Nobody knows how the future will be like. We can just try to imagine it.

I am sure many things will change - a few things for better but the most ones for worse. I think a big problem will be the overpopulation in cities.
Soon there will be no more clean water for everyone. It will get always more and more difficult to feed all people. The gap between poor and rich will get bigger.
Another problem will be the global warming. Lots of glaciers will disappear, the sea level will rise and this will cause more natural catastrophes. If we don’t stop polluting our planet we all could soon face the consequences.
But we should also see the good changes.
I think a really good thing is the internet. We will be able to have friends all over the world.
Maybe we will spend the whole day at the computer, which is not really a good thing to do. So we have to make sure to do sports and have a healthy lifestyle in order not to get overweight. I’m sure technology will improve and scientists will find opportunities to heal diseases.
All in all I look into the future in a positive way.

We don’t know how our life will be like in 2050. We can only try to imagine it, but I’m sure it will be different.
For example, it would be good if we were able to create cars that are powered by environmentally-friendly petrol. We will need them because otherwise our nature will be completely destroyed.
Instead of driving the car we should ride the bike more often or use public transport. I also think in the future we will use the computer a lot more than we do now. Scientists will invent high speed computers with a better technology. They will help us in our life.
On the one hand they could be very useful, but on the other hand we might get lazy because everything is done by robots.

When I think of the future, I feel that technology will be so advanced that cars drive without any help of the driver. There will be computer systems that can find the right route themselves. I am sure things and people will be different. Maybe there won’t be so much car exhaust any more. Children won’t ride bikes anymore because scientists will have invented mini with batteries for kids. On one hand this will be convenient and fun, but on the other hand it has negative effects as children will not do enough sports anymore and will be overweight. I also think that there will be more chemistry in our food.

I do not except that people will build more shopping centres and big cities because there won’t be enough space anymore.
One of the biggest problems will be the gap between the rich and the poor. So people from developing countries will not accept this anymore and protest and fight for their right to live a good life.

When I think of the future I feel really scared. There are so many questions. What will the future bring?

How our life will be different in year 2050?

We don’t know how our future will look like. We only can try to imagine it.

At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050 we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friend through the Internet – even our husbands or wives will be met by us in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today – we will feel a little lonely and isolated from others.

Computers will also help us in many other activities. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their studying easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which playing similar role to computers, like robots which will be making housework for us.

Spending holiday will also be completely different. Travelling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar - powered cars which will be much more environmentally – friendly.

We could expect that the faster technological progress is the more polluted environment we have. But it isn’t true. Scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) .
We will also pay more attention to protecting the environment so our surroundings as well as health will be in a better condition that they could seem to be.

Although we can’t predict changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather optimistic about this matter. We should live and be happy not thinking too much about what will or won’t be possible in the future.

What is a typical British lunch?

Many children at school and adults at work will have a 'packed lunch'. This typically consists of a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a piece of fruit and a drink. The 'packed lunch' is kept in a plastic container.

Sandwiches are also known as a 'butty' or 'sarnie' in some parts of the UK.

My favourite sandwich is prawn and mayonnaise. I also love tuna and mayonnaise and ham and pickle sandwiches.

The evening meal is usually called 'tea', 'dinner' or 'supper'.

What is a traditional British Dinner?

A typical British meal for dinner is "meat and two veg". We put hot brown gravy, (traditionally made from the juices of the roast meat, but more often today from a packet!) on the meat and usually the vegetables. One of the vegetables is almost always potatoes.

What is a typical British Dinner like today?

The traditional meal is rarely eaten nowadays, apart from on Sundays. A recent survey found that most people in Britain eat curry! Rice or pasta dishes are now favoured as the 'British Dinner'.

Vegetables grown in England, like potatoes, carrots, peas, cabbages and onions, are still very popular.

The Sunday Roast Dinner

Sunday lunch time is a typical time to eat the traditional Sunday Roast.

Traditionally it consists of roast meat, (cooked in the oven for about two hours), two different kinds of vegetables and potatoes with a Yorkshire pudding. The most common joints are beef, lamb or pork; chicken is also popular.

Beef is eaten with hot white horseradish sauce, pork with sweet apple sauce and lamb with green mint sauce. Gravy is poured over the meat.

Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock does just that and goes on the most dangerous journey of his life.

For 30 days he can't eat or drink anything that isn't on McDonald's menu; he must eat three times a day; he must consume everything on the menu at least once and supersize his meal if asked.
Spurlock travels across the country interviewing people who eat fast food and experts on fast food. Spurlock's fast food diet changes him mentally and physically and the film might probably make you think twice about picking up another Big Mac.

Gradable and Non-gradable Adjectives

Adjectives describe qualities (characteristics) of nouns.

Some qualities can vary in intensity or grade (for example: rather hot, hot, very hot; hot, hotter, the hottest).

The adjective hot is gradable.
Other qualities cannot vary in intensity or grade because they are:
1. extremes (for example: freezing)
2. absolutes (for example: dead)
3. classifying (for example: nuclear)

The adjectives freezing, dead and nuclear are non-gradable.

Gradable Adjectives

A gradable adjective can be used with "grading adverbs" that vary the adjective's grade or intensity. Look at these examples:

A non-gradable adjective cannot be used with grading adverbs:

Most people around the world seem to think a typical English breakfast consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, fried bread, mushrooms and baked beans all washed down with a cup of coffee. Nowadays, however, a typical English breakfast is more likely to be a bowl of cereals, a slice of toast, orange juice and a cup of coffee.

Many people, especially children, in England will eat a bowl of cereal. They are made with different grains such as corn, wheat, oats etc.

In the winter many people will eat "porridge" or boiled oats.

The most common Native American women's hairstyles were a simple flowing hairstyle (either with or without bangs) or long braids (either two braids or one single braid.) Some women painted horizontal stripes on their hair or dyed the center part a bright color. In the southeast, many women from tribes such as the Creek and Chickasaw wore their hair on top of their heads in buns or topknots. In the southwest, women from the Navajo and Pueblo tribes often wore their hair tied behind their heads in a kind of twist best known as a chongo (the Pueblo word for this hairstyle.) Other Southwestern Indian women preferred to keep their hair cut to shoulder length. One distinctive tribal hairstyle for women was the elaborate squash blossom or butterfly whorls worn by Hopi maidens. To make this hairdo, a young woman's mother would wind her hair around a curved piece of wood to give it a round shape, then remove the wood frame. Only unmarried young women wore this complex hairstyle. Another unique tribal hairstyle was the board or bonnet hair popular among Seminole women in the 1800's. Seminole women made their hair into this disk shape by fanning it over a tilted cardboard frame (which then stayed in place under their hair.) Traditionally, most Seminole women wore their hair on top of their heads like other southeastern Indian tribes, and today the black board style is almost never worn. However, it can still be seen on Seminole palmetto dolls, which are usually made with this distinctively Seminole hairstyle.

The most common Native American men's hairstyles were flowing hairstyles, long braids, or shaved heads. But there were many different versions of each of these basic hairstyles. Hair held great symbolic importance for men in many Native American tribes, especially in Western tribes like the Sioux and Blackfoot. Men in these tribes only cut their hair to show grief or shame, and often wore the front part of their hair in special styles including pompadours (hair stiffened with grease or clay so that it stands up), forelocks (one long strand of hair hanging down between the eyes), or small braids or topknots arranged in various shapes. In Eastern tribes like the Lenape and Iroquois tribes, most warriors shaved their heads except for a scalplock (a single lock of hair on the crown of their head), tonsure (a fringe of hair around the head), or roach (a stiff crest of hair running down the middle of the head.) The roach hairstyle is often known as a Mohawk or Mohican hairstyle, after two tribes who frequently wore it. Native American men would often wear artificial roaches, too, which were made of brightly colored porcupine or deer hair. Men with shaved heads and men with long braids would both wear artificial roaches sometimes. Most Southwest Indian men originally wore their hair in a chongo style similar to the women's. (Chongo is a Pueblo word; the same hairstyle is also known as Tsiiyéél in Navajo and Hömsoma in Hopi.) Shoulder-length hair with a cloth bandana around it became a more popular style in the Southwest by the 1800's. Other Southwestern men twisted their hair into long hair rolls resembling modern dreadlocks, which they stiffened with clay and painted. On the Northwest Coast and northern California, men sometimes wore topknots on top of their heads. Northwest Coast men also wore mustaches and sometimes beards, while men in most other Native American tribes kept their faces shaved.

˜Do Native Americans still wear these hairstyles today?

Some of them. Braids and long flowing hair are still popular hairstyles, especially among women, but also for some men. Native Americans in some Plains and Western tribes continue to place great spiritual value on their hair, cutting it only when they are in mourning. Chongos are still worn by some Native American women in the southwest. Other special hairstyles like forelocks and squash blossoms are seen only at religious and cultural events. The roach ('Mohawk') hairstyle is almost never worn anymore, but artificial roaches are still worn at powwows all over the country.

Wigwam Homes

Wigwams (or wetus) are Native American houses used by Algonquian Indians in the woodland regions. Wigwam is the word for "house" in the Abenaki tribe, and wetu is the word for "house" in the Wampanoag tribe. Sometimes they are also known as birchbark houses. Wigwams are small houses, usually 8-10 feet tall. Wigwams are made of wooden frames which are covered with woven mats and sheets of birchbark. The frame can be shaped like a dome, like a cone, or like a rectangle with an arched roof. Once the birchbark is in place, ropes or strips of wood are wrapped around the wigwam to hold the bark in place. Here are some pictures of a woman building a wigwam.

Wigwams are good houses for people who stay in the same place for months at a time. Most Algonquian Indians lived together in settled villages during the farming season, but during the winter, each family group would move to their own hunting camp. Wigwams are not portable, but they are small and easy to build. Woodland Indian families could build new wigwams every year when they set up their winter camps.

Longhouses

Longhouses are Native American homes used by the Iroquois tribes and some of their Algonquian neighbors. They are built similarly to wigwams, with pole frames and elm bark covering. The main difference is that longhouses are much, much larger than wigwams. Longhouses could be 150 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 20 feet high. Inside the longhouse, raised platforms created a second story, which was used for sleeping space. Mats and wood screens divided the longhouse into separate rooms. Each longhouse housed an entire clan-- as many as 60 people!

Longhouses are good homes for people who intend to stay in the same place for a long time. A longhouse is large and takes a lot of time to build and decorate. The Iroquois were farming people who lived in permanent villages. Iroquois men sometimes built wigwams for themselves when they were going on hunting trips, but women might live in the same longhouse their whole life.

Tepees (also spelled Teepees or Tipis) are tent-like American Indian houses used by Plains tribes. A tepee is made of a cone-shaped wooden frame with a covering of buffalo hide. Like modern tents, tepees are carefully designed to set up and break down quickly. As a tribe moved from place to place, each family would bring their tipi poles and hide tent along with them. Originally, tepees were about 12 feet high, but once the Plains Indian tribes acquired horses, they began building them twice as high.

Tepees are good houses for people who are always on the move. Plains Indians migrated frequently to follow the movements of the buffalo herds. An entire Plains Indian village could have their tepees packed up and ready to move within an hour. There were fewer trees on the Great Plains than in the Woodlands, so it was important for Plains tribes to carry their long poles with them whenever they traveled instead of trying to find new ones each time they moved.

Grass Houses

Grass houses are American Indian homes used in the Southern Plains by tribes such as the Caddos. They resemble large wigwams but are made with different materials. Grass houses are made with a wooden frame bent into a beehive shape and thatched with long prairie grass. These were large buildings, sometimes more than 40 feet tall.

Grass houses are good homes for people in a warm climate. In the northern plains, winters are too cold to make homes out of prairie grass. But in the southern plains of Texas, houses like these were comfortable for the people who used them.

Wattle and Daub Houses

Wattle and daub houses (also known as asi, the Cherokee word for them) are Native American houses used by southeastern tribes. Wattle and daub houses are made by weaving rivercane, wood, and vines into a frame, then coating the frame with plaster. The roof was either thatched with grass or shingled with bark.

Wattle and daub houses are permanent structures that take a lot of effort to build. Like longhouses, they are good homes for agricultural people who intended to stay in one place, like the Cherokees and Creeks. Making wattle and daub houses requires a fairly warm climate to dry the plaster.

Chickees

Chickees (also known as chickee huts, stilt houses or platform dwellings) are Native American homes used primarily in Florida by tribes like the Seminole Indians. Chickee houses consisted of thick posts supporting a thatched roof and a flat wooden platform raised several feet off the ground. They did not have any walls. During rainstorms, Florida Indians would lash tarps made of hide or cloth to the chickee frame to keep themselves dry, but most of the time, the sides of the structure were left open.

Chickees are good homes for people living in a hot, swampy climate. The long posts keep the house from sinking into marshy earth, and raising the floor of the hut off the ground keeps swamp animals like snakes out of the house. Walls or permanent house coverings are not necessary in a tropical climate where it never gets cold.

Adobe Houses

Adobe houses (also known as pueblos) are Native American house complexes used by the Pueblo Indians of the Southwest. Adobe pueblos are modular, multi-story houses made of adobe (clay and straw baked into hard bricks) or of large stones cemented together with adobe. Each adobe unit is home to one family, like a modern apartment. The whole structure, which can contain dozens of units, is often home to an entire extended clan.

Adobe houses are good homes to build in a warm, dry climate where adobe can be easily mixed and dried. These are homes for farming people who have no need to move their village to a new location. In fact, some Pueblo people have been living in the same adobe house complex, such as Sky City, for dozens of generations.

Earthen Houses

Earthen house is a general term referring to several types of Native American homes including Navajo hogans, Sioux earth lodges, subarctic sod houses, and Native American pit houses of the West Coast and Plateau. Earthen houses made by different tribes had different designs, but all were semi-subterranean dwellings -- basement-like living spaces dug from the earth, with a domed mound built over the top (usually a wooden frame covered with earth or reeds.)

Earthern houses are good for people who want permanent homes and live in an area that is not forested. (It's difficult work to excavate underground homes in areas with many tree roots!) Living partially underground has several benefits, especially in harsh climates-- the earth offers natural protection from wind and strong weather.

Igloos (or Iglu) are snow houses used by the Inuit (Eskimos) of northern Canada. Not all Inuit people used igloos -- some built sod houses instead, using whale bones instead of wooden poles for a frame. Like a sod house, the igloo is dome-shaped and slightly excavated, but it is built from the snow, with large blocks of ice set in a spiral pattern and packed with snow to form the dome.

Igloos are good houses for the polar region, where the earth is frozen, the snow cover is deep, and there are few trees. Snow is a good insulator, and dense blocks of ice offer good protection against the arctic winds.

Brush Shelters

Brush shelters (including wickiups, lean-tos, gowa, etc.) are temporary Native American dwellings used by many tribes. Brush shelters are typically very small, like a camping tent. People cannot usually stand up straight inside brush lodges -- they are only used for sleeping in. A brush shelter is made of a simple wooden frame covered with brush (branches, leaves, and grass.) The frame can be cone-shaped, with one side left open as a door, or tent-shaped, with both ends left open.

Most Native Americans only made a brush shelter when they were out camping in the wilderness. But some migratory tribes who lived in warm dry climates, such as the Apache tribes, built brush shelters as homes on a regular basis. They can be assembled quickly from materials that are easy to find in the environment, so people who build villages of brush shelters can move around freely without having to drag teepee poles.

The Destruction of Indian America

The arrival of the Europeans in the New World was the beginning of the end of Indian life. Many settlers thought they were superior to the Indians and tried to force them to take on their way of life.
Land became the main problem between the Europeans and the Indians. Settlers wanted land for farming and mining. As time went on, more and more Indians were forced off their land as new settlers arrived and travelled west.
At first settlers and Indians were friendly towards each other but when they started to protect their land fighting broke out.
In 1830 a law was passed that allowed the government to move Indian tribes to the land west of the Mississippi.
When gold was found in California in the 1850s settlers rushed west as quickly as possible and destroyed the land that the Indians depended on for hunting and fishing.
At the beginning of the 20th century the American government started putting Indian tribes on reservations in the western part of the United States. Later on, American Indians were allowed to vote and the government tried to integrate them into society.
Native Americans Today
About 2.5 million Native Americans live in the USA today. The biggest tribes are the Cherokee, Chippewa, Navajo and Sioux. About a third of the Indians in the US live on reservations. The rest live in cities or towns.
Indian culture is still preserved on reservations. Here, Indians practice old traditions. However, they are worried that their traditions will disappear because more and more Indians are being integrated into society.
Today, Native Americans are better off than they were at the beginning of the 20th century. They get better education; many go to high school and some to college. Many Native Americans work as lawyers, doctors or have other important jobs, like working for government companies.
Some tribes get money from tourism or selling handicrafts. In 1988 the government al-lowed casinos and other gambling operations on reservations. Other tribes earn money from taxes on oil or gas that is produced on their land.
Even though life has improved , Native Americans still face many problems in today’s America. Unemployment on reservations is about 50%. The income of an Indian family is much lower than that of a white family. Most Indians are badly paid and are unskilled workers. Suicide rates are also higher than in other places. Some Indians try to reduce their problems by drinking alcohol and taking drugs.

Bei Sätzen mit zwei Objekten können wir immer zwei Passivsätze bilden, d. h. jedes der beiden Objekte kann zum Subjekt eines Passivsatzes werden.
Im Englischen wird häufiger das "personal object" (the children, them) zum Subjekt des Passivsatzes gemacht (= personal passive)

Ein Personal Pronoun steht dann als Subjekt natürlich im 1. Fall:

She gave me a necklace. She gave you a necklace.
I was given ..... You were given.....
She gave her ............ She gave him............
She was given ............. He was given.......
She gave us ................... She gave them..........
We were given ......... They were given...

Bei folgenden Verben findest du häufig ein Personal Passive:
bring, give, lend, offer, pay, promise, teach, tell, sell, send, show

The Indigeous People of North America

When European explorers arrived in America in 1492 they found around 2 million indigenous people living there.
The Europeans mistakenly called them Indians, thinking they had landed in the Indies in the Far East of Asia.
The explorer Christopher Columbus made this famous mistake.
The term “Indians” stuck with the people who lived there despite not even coming from India!!!.
How rude!!
These 'Indians' belonged to at least 300 different tribes and spoke over 2,000 different languages.
Famous examples of these indigenous tribes are

_ the Cheyenne

_ the Blackfoot

_ the Comanche

_ the Sioux

Each tribe spoke a separate language, and their houses, clothes and entertainment differed. However, they all followed a similar life based on hunting and farming.
These indigenous people were related to the peoples of north eastern Asia.
It is thought that their ancestors crossed a land bridge linking Siberia to Alaska around 30,000 BC.
There was gradual movement south to the Great Plains of (the yet to be
called) America.
