I would suggest having an activity or activities on solely the past perfect before asking writers to do activities comparing past and past perfect. Let them fully comprehend and learn to use the tense before moving on to distinguishing it from other tenses. What think you?

Taken from the questions in exercise 2. The auto correct insists that the following is the correct answer:

6. I was worried about Samantha because I had called her several times but she (had not answered) the phone. (be; call; never answer)

But should the correct answer not be:

6. I was worried about Samantha because I had called her several times but she did not answer the phone. (be; call; never answer)

And to be honest, even with my own correction, it still doesn't sound right! I think that's maybe because I've ignored the relevant punctuation.

It would be more natural (and correct, in my opinion ) to say:

"I was worried about Samantha because I had called her phone several times, but she didn't answer."

Yeh? nay?

Thanks

I would say:
I was worried about Samantha because I had called her several times and she hadn't answered the phone.

It is the past perfect because she hadn't answered when you had called her; the two events happened at the same time.
